March, 2002 News

Dear Parents,
Student Led Conferencing a.k.a. Celebration of Learning is on Thursday night, March 28th. Our class has a longer time from 5:30-7:00. We would like to split the class in half so that our room is not so crowded and to allow time to see all of your child’s portfolio as well as projects located on the computers. Children who have a number from 1-11 will come from 5:30-6:15. Children who have a number from 12-22 will come from 6:15-7:00. This night is very important! Your child will be sharing his/her portfolio with you. It will take about 30-45 minutes. Soon after your conference with your child, please write a note to your child and send it back to school in a sealed envelope. Please send your letter by the Wednesday April 3rd!! We will have a “letter opening party” when everyone has a letter from their parents explaining what a wonderful job they did during their Celebration of learning.
We have been learning about the Sun, Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune so far! Be sure to ask your child about the books we have read: The Wright Brothers, Robert Goddard, John Glen, Shannon Lucid, Postcards from Pluto and the beginning of Magic School Bus Lost in the Solar System! Next week we will continue our Literature Journals with Magic School Bus and begin studying the Space Shuttle (transportation). We will make three teams, assign them a space mission, take them to the shuttle room and launch them off into space (a simulation that is!)
March 4-8 Book Fair---open late Thursday evening
March 18-22 is spring break!
March 12-14J og-A-Thon during PE
March 15th- Otis Lennon- deadline to sign up for test
April 2-if you ever wanted to know how to help your child’s reading skills....mark your calendars- I highly encourage all of our parents to attend this special evening....Celebrate the art of reading....6;30 pm in the media center. Just a few of the activities will include: how to help with book reports and research projects, how to rhyme, how to pick an appropriate reading level for your child, how to play games in the card that enrich reading, What is a phoneme? What is a sight word? What is a story web? You can even get a Library card this evening! This will be such an informative evening and a very first of its kind for our campus! (Borders will be providing coffee!)

Your children are wonderful to work with- I truly enjoy coming to school every day!

Sincerely,
Mrs. McCoy
