August, 2001 News

Our first few days of school have been wonderful!! Your children are terrific. I'm looking forward to seeing you all again on back to school night (Aug. 28-7:00-8:00 pm- parents only). I thought I'd explain a few new things that are starting soon. Monday, August 20th, your child will bring home a spelling list. This will be written in the agenda. He/she will have a spelling test on Friday. We will work every day with their words, but they will also need to study at home. It is good to have the children spell the words orally as well as spell them on paper.

We are also starting QUESTION OF THE WEEK ON AUG. 27th. This is a research project to work on at home (school time can also be used). For the first several weeks I am letting the children decide if they want to do it. (It can be difficult if the child has not had a lot of experience using an encyclopedia and library). If your child chooses to do the project, they will receive Mickey money -which help them get into the treasure chest!!!! I'd like them to at least write 5 sentences about the topic and illustrate or make some type of a project. This can be as simple or complex as you and your child decide! Your child can spend 15 minutes or an hour working on it. I am very flexible on this. If your child does work extra hard I will reward him/her for their effort. PLEASE do not allow them to print off information from the Internet or a CD and turn it in. I want the sentences to be in the child’s own words.

TREASURE CHEST- We have a gold treasure chest that needs to be filled with goodies. If you could contribute candy, small toys, etc. it would be greatly appreciated.

HOMEWORK- Study spelling words, read EVERY night for 15 min., and work on question of the week (not mandatory until January).

COOL CAT OF THE WEEK (A.K.A. FIRST CLASS KID) starts this week. Every week, I choose one child to be our Cool Cat. We will hang a small poster about your child outside our room. If your child wants to bring his/her 1st grade poster, that is fine! We will also make a book for them on Friday.

Monday, we begin our dinosaur unit!! Your child may bring books, puzzles, pictures, articles, and even plastic dinosaurs for the next two weeks.

The following is our tentative schedule-I'll let you know if it changes:
